Proud Moment in a Silly Hat

I made a cake! :) Not just an ordinary cake. I made Aunty Clara's Almond Butter Cake. Apparently, the GM really likes it. He asked me to make a small one so they could try.

Since I couldn't find any almonds, I use hazelnuts instead. So it became the hazelnut butter cake. Also, I didn't make regular butter cream icing. I made a chocolate butter cream. The whole thing turned out good. I think it was a little too sweet but everyone else thought it was ok. The hazelnut and chocolate icing goes very well together.

Anyway, since the small cake was ok, GM asked me to make a big one. Something they could sell. So I did. I made a bigger cake (almost the size of our cheese cake). I covered it with chocolate butter cream and sprinkled hazelnut on top. It looks quite nice! I feel so bangga!

One thing I've realised, though, is that I don't really like butter cream icing. I think maybe it;s because I had quite a lot of it a while ago. I used to eat the icing while making cakes. I'm fed up of it. Good for me, I guess. Less sugar.

More on food. The ayam goreng kunyit at Kafe An-Nurs is killer! I'm slowly trying out all their chicken dishes and this has to be the best so far. Second would be the ayam masak halia. It has become the place I haunt during breaks. I like it there. :)

I think I'm getting used to work. I feel more comfortable there. I know almost everyones name and I know what I need to do without being told. Of course, I still need some sort of assistance at times but all in all, I'm good. Except for the hat. I feel really silly wearing a hat at work.

Short o' cake

Ok, so I've recoloured my blog. It looks ok now I guess.

I'm supposed to bake a cake for someones (or two) birthday which is tomorrow. It's a chocolate cake with some special butter cream orange icing. And chocolate fans!

Well, according to the recipes, the batter is supposed to fill two 8 inch round cake tins. Meaning, I'd end up with two round cakes. Then I'll cut the two cakes horizontally to get 4 layers. Problem is, I don't know what the book means when it says 8 inch round pan. Does it mean 8 inch in diameter or 8 inch in circumference? That's two different sizes, you know.

So, since I was confused, I used a 5.5 inch square pan instead. According to the logic in my brain, i should be able to get 2 cakes from that batter if I use the 5 inch pan. Logically la. But then again, how logical can that conclusion be when I don't even know what the book means by '8 inch round pan' ?

Anyway, I used the square pan and it turns out that the batter is only enough for 1 cake. Does this mean that the batter really was meant for one cake and I was supposed to make 2 batches? Why didn't they just say so!
Now, I have a 5.5 inch square cake that's not really very tall. It won't look birthday cakey at all. So, I have to whip up another batch of batter and bake another cake.

Which is when I realise that I only have 1 egg left. Not a good sign. So, I've sent bro to the shop to get some eggs. He's been gone for a while now. I think he sent his car for servicing too. Mangkuk.

Oh well, I'll just have to wait then. :P

Oh December!

Hey BlogWorld, I'm back after 11 whole days! And what and amazing 11 days it was.

Let's start off with Ma's birthday. It didn't go as planned (I should be getting used to this by now) but it went great. Bro got transferred on that day itself to Curve and everyone was more than a little stressed. Dinner was cancelled and things weren't looking too good. I was off on that day so I made ma a Smiley Cake.

It took me the whole day because I made it two layered with chocolate frosting in the center and butter icing on top. I steamed a fish for ma and me for dinner. Aunty Lucy came over as did Aunty Pat and Daniel and Nadiah. When ma came home, we sang her a birthday song! Bro even managed to come home early. So then, Aunty Pat and Nad went home and the rest of us went out for dinner. The fish went in the fridge:)

From the 9th till the 12th, I was kept busy helping ma with her CERiA stuff. They had a symposium, 'The Lancet Series Symposium: HIV In Drug Users' (9th & 10th) followed by a two day WHO-UNAIDS Consultation Meeting (11th & 12th). The symposium was truly enlightening. I learned a lot from all the speakers I heard. After those two days in the symposium, I definitely understand the need for research and policy change when it comes to battling stigma and the disease itself. Mostly, I just drove ma around to where ever she needed to go, including KLHilton->UM, UM->KLHilton, UM->PJHilton, vice versa and KLHilton->PJHilton. We were all so tired but just kept going. We were running on adrenaline those four days. The consultation wasn't really as taxing as the symposium but I still had a fair share of driving around to do. We had to transfer about 19 people's baggage from PJ to KL, get them checked in the new hotel and place each bag in the right room. It took us four hours to figure things out. Lucky for us everyone else was busy with the symposium. By the time they arrived, everything was settled and we headed to KLCC for dinner. We had a Chinese-style dinner with 8 courses. The food was, of course, delicious. However, the portions were to small for me. I was still hungry at the end. My favourite course was the Prawns with Oats. It was the bomb! High cholesterol prawns coated with healthy oats and then deep fried to gives us the ultimate, most delicious unhealthy course ever! I'd eat that again and again if I could.

Because we were helping out with the two events, we got to stay in KL Hilton for 2 nights and then PJ Hilton for another 3 nights. It was awesome! KL Hilton was of course more expensive and a lot more modern. They had a plasma TV in the room and a bathtub and shower. the Bathroom was beautiful. PJ Hilton was great too. Although not as expensive or modern as KL Hilton, I still preferred this one. It more my type. Homey and cozy as apposed to modern and sleek.

Anyway, after the 12th, I went back to my usual days but I was still exhausted. Work has been wonderful with he exception of June's absence. I really miss her. I haven't seen for more then a week now. Christmas is looming and there's a lot more things to be done.

I have a lot more to say but this is all, for now. I didn't have access to a computer last weekend so I stored everything in my brain and I'm in the process of transferring it to paper before I lose it all. I'll be sure to update my blog more often!

Hyper!

I wish I had an iPad with me at all times. That way, I can blog just about everything I want to. At my current situation, I'm only posting half of what I want to because my brain is just too fast. I can't remember exactly what I want to post and even if I do, it wont be with as much vigour as it should. I really need to find a solution for this. I keep losing a lot of great ideas and phrases :(

Anyway, I was supposed to bake a batman cake for Jaydon's 5th Birthday Party but the cake sank in the middle for reasons beyod my understanding. I put it back in the oven to try and bake the center, which was not cooked, but it didn't work. So then, I thought of buying a plain, undecorated butter cake and ice it myself but the only bakery that would have that cake was closed for the day. In the end, I had to buy a ready-made American Chocolate cake for the little boy. I feel like such a failure. Lucky for me, Jaydon didn't know that he was supposed to get a batman cake. I'm currently guilt-ridden and my ego just got a good bashing!
I hope my others cakes come out well. I don't think my self-esteem can't afford another failure.

Anyway, I re-worked the failed cake. I cut off the sides (which were perfectly baked) and made mini cakes. I used the icing (intended for the Batman Cake) and made personalised decorations. I wrote people's initials on the cake with yellow icing (the background was black). It turned out quite nice, just not what I was expecting (no batman at all!) Predictably, Dinesh whacked, not only his, but Kathiga's cake as well! Visha's got smashed accidentally, so I owe her another one :P

AAHH!! I have so many thoughts passing through my mind right now. I can't even pin-point one idea to write out! (The detriments of having such a hyper-active brain!)

Who Live's in A Pineapple Under The Sea??

SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS!

I found something to get my blood pumping and all excited about making a cake! Jez just got her driver's license and she's a little stressed about SPM (trials and all) so I decied to bake her a cake. A spongebob cake for the spongebob freak!

I made an Almond Butter cake and used a creamy butter icing (as per the recipes given in the class I went for).
Work In Progress~~
I spent a little more time on it than anyone else would but that's because it's my first cake and I wanted to get it right. I found a picture of the 'Yellow Fellow' online and I used it as a template.
FINISHED!
I'm so proud of myself! I managed to make this cake all by myself and wasn't a huge disaster! At this time, I would like to thank Aunty Clara for teaching the ways of baking and decorating a cake:) THANK YOU!

JuneDay!

It's also June's birthday today! Finally 18 :) We (as in June, Emy and I) hung out after they (as in June and Emy) signed out. We had Secret Recipe cake, or cakes to be exact.

Chocolate cheese (by Emy), Pecan (pronounced as 'pekan' by us 'kampung girls') Butterscotch (by June), Brownie Walnut (by Me)

That's me attacking June's cake!

Here's June attacking Emy's choice!

And here's Emy about to annihilate my brownie!

Apparently, secret recipe upgraded and became kind of posh when I wasn't looking. They have really nice, bouncy banquets and beautifully black and emo chandeliers. We talked, ate, swapped cakes and talked some more. We had so much fun that we almost missed the movie, which was at 1940 hours (that's 7.40pm). Even when we realised that we were late, we remained calm and strolled towards the cinema. We arrived just as the movie started, luckily, so we didn't miss much.

By the way, it was a good movie. Funny and sweet. Not at all what you'd expect from a title like "The Killers". But then, once you hear that Ashton Kutcher and Katherine Heigl are starring, you'll start laughing even before the opening credits. :) It wasn't terrible hilarious, but not a flop either. At least I don't think so.

!!HAPPY 18th BUGDAY JUNETTE!!

Pot Luck-ing!

I went to CERiA with ma today! We celebrated Aunty Margaret's and Kak Zaleha's birthday. It was so much fun. We had a pot luck with food from different continents, party hats and even overly-pink mouse ears for the birthday girls to wear. I took some pictures with the camera (which was also shockingly pink! *bluek*)
Birthday girls!
pot luck-ing :P
too much pink but it was still fun :)
..mama mouse & kathy mouse..
Anyway, it's now Tuesday, the 4th day of my 2-week school holiday, and I can proudly say that I'm done with all my notes! Also, I have done all the structured questions and one essay for PP. Hopefully, I'll keep this up and finish all the questions by this week. Only one more essay each for PP and MUET. After that... no, it's not a home run. I still have alot of reading to do, but at least it'll be a load off.
Good luck to me!!

Freedom Has Settled In..

Today was just awesome!

Me and Nadiah (Nadiah did all the work) baked a cake for the farewell party.

It taste good if I do say so myself.

After the cake baking, i went to the salon to get my hair done. I did it to mark my post-SPM, pre-STPM days. Here's how it went..
I had my hair bleached first so that the colour would stand out

.

Here I am with red highlights! (cant really see it in this picture)

Anyway, the red hair is like a flag marking my 'freedom'. I honestly couldn't stop smiling all through the process because I was so excited. I think some of the customers we're a little freaked at my expression. But I feel awesome now.

After that I had a farewell party thrown by our tuition class. The teachers are really great. They're all so friendly, like kids themselves (perasan muda!). I'm really going to miss them.

Sir Suben in white, Sir Jai is the fair one in black

:)

So that was the day!!!
